Things You Can Live Without to Be More Comfortable in Your RV

Decluttering and embracing minimalism is key to feeling at home in your RV. If you're going to move in full time, it's essential to not bring too much with you. This is the difference between people who love living in their RV and those who find it cramped. If you're considering living in your RV full time, this is our list of things you can easily live without to enjoy a clutter-free home on wheels. Remember: it’s not about sacrificing comfort—it’s about prioritizing what truly adds value to your life.

Things You Can Live Without to Be More Comfortable in Your RV

Excess Kitchen Gadgets

If you're like most Americans, you have a few kitchen cabinets or drawers filled with utensils, small appliances, and gadgets. It's normal to have multiple cutting boards, a collection of spatulas and spoons, and a specialized tool for every task.

In reality, most of these things are pretty redundant. Do you really need 5 cutting boards, or mutliple citrus juicers? How many sets of tongs are you actually using? Let’s face it—most of us have kitchen drawers overflowing with gadgets we rarely use. In an RV, space is at a premium, so choose to just bring the essentials, and focus on the items you use daily that can serve multiple purposes.

Things like bread makers, waffle irons, and multiple sets of dishes are luxuries you likely won’t miss. Many RVers find that a small countertop appliance, like an Instant Pot or air fryer, can do the job of several bulky items. The list of essentials with vary from person to person, but take some time to really pare down your kitchen gear and you'll be amazed at how simple a collection of supplies you really need.

Rarely-Worn Clothing

Moving to an RV is the perfect time to embrace a capsule wardrobe and say goodbye to rarely worn or extremely specific clothing. Unless it's something you love and wear often, it doesn't make sense to fill your RV wardrobe with items that won't mix and match.

Ditch those “just in case” outfits and focus on pieces that can be layered or mixed and matched. If your travels follow warm weather, you can skip heavy coats and bulky sweaters. For colder trips, invest in a compact, packable jacket that takes up less room.

Books and DVDs

These are two heavy collections of items that can be easily replaced with a space saving digital alternative. By keeping only a few favorite books with you, all your other reading can take place on an e-reader. You can even borrow these digital copies from libraries around the country, without taking up any new space in your RV.

In the same way, opting to pay for a streaming service is a better use of your resources than finding a place to keep bulky DVDs. With so many options to stream online, there's no need to sacrifice previous square footage for physical copies.

Duplicate Items

Many people don't think about how many duplicate items they have in their home. In a traditional home, you might have multiple sets of everything—from towels to tools. In an RV, one set is usually enough. For example:

  • One towel per person.

  • One or two sets of sheets.

  • One multi-tool instead of a drawer of single-purpose tools.

Streamlining duplicates will save you significant storage space (and make keeping things tidy especially simple).
